Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller person will be able to successfully defend themselves against a larger opponent using leverage, position, and proper technique. These techniques include joint-locks and chokes.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is known as 'the gentle art'. Students learn to control an opponent and force them to submit, using varying levels of severity as needed.
BJJ is a great physical and mental workout. Students gain focus, discipline, problem-solving, fine motor skills.
Allan Clarke is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt.
"I have trained in multiple disciplines of martial arts for the last 15 years including Muay Thai, Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). In 2009, I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and instantly fell in love with it. The functionality of BJJ is what attracted me to it the most. Having a smaller opponent being able to hold their own or even defeat a much larger opponent speaks volumes in my eyes.
I still actively compete and train BJJ in addition to instructing at Back to the Mat. I truly enjoy instructing all ages; as well as, seeing people’s personal growth through this amazing art. Through my personal experience I have found that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is great for confidence, self-defense and fine motor skill development. Or, if your goal is to get in shape, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great workout. I believe that BJJ is something that you can enjoy and participate in for your entire life. "
